PCI-e x1 to PCI-E x16 , video card Q?

Hi

i bought a video card that is PCI-e 16 and i only have PCI-e x1, if i buy this product

http://alrightdeals.com/Item.htm?Id=S5_C…

will the new video card work? its a VisionTek Radeon X1550 - PCI-e|||its only for low form factor cards, if you put it in with a normal card it wont line up with the expansion slot on the back of the case. I will guess that even if it did fit and work it would be like running 16 lanes of traffic across a 1 lane bridge but for $30 its worth a shot though...|||If you get time, I wish you would email me, and tell me the motherboard that you have that has only a PCI-Express x1 slot, and does not have a PCI-Express slot. Or, tell me the computer name and model. (Click on my Chickster avatar, and on my profile page click on Email Chickster)

A PCI-x1 slot has 36 contact pins in the slot. 18 on each side.

A PCI-x16 slot has 164 contact pins. 82 on each side.

(Scroll down the page about halfway. Look at the chart to the left of the photo that has 'An XFX brand Nvidia GeForce 6600GT, ya-da, ya-da', showing)

Looking at the 'technical specifications' for the Startech PEX1 to 16 adapter, on it's 'technical specifications' page, on Startech.com, and knowing how the PCI Technology works, this adapter will work.

(This page IS NOT technical by any means! lol!)

From Wikipedia.org-PCI-Express article:

"A connection between any two PCIe devices is known as a "link", and is built up from a collection of 1 or more lanes. All devices must minimally support single-lane (x1) link. Devices may optionally support wider links composed of 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 32 lanes. This allows for very good compatibility in two ways:

* a PCIe card will physically fit (and work correctly) in any slot that is at least as large as it is (e.g. an x1 sized card will work in any sized slot);

* a slot of a large physical size (e.g. x16) can be wired electrically with fewer lanes (e.g. x1, x4, or x8) as long as it provides the power and ground connections required by the larger physical slot size."

This stands to reason, as you can share a wire with different electrical signals. Take a cable, from the cable company for example. This cable, has a shielded ONE strand of solid copper wire.

You can have cable TV, phone, and Internet access, across this one strand of wire.

I frankly, would buy a motherboard that has a PCI-Express x16 slot on it. Just the way I ride.|||personally I would return your video card and buy a compatible one also which motherboard do you have? does it have a agp video card?|||VisionTek Radeon X1550 - PCI-e would have to be a low profile model.

|||It might work but personally i'd add a few more $'s to that price and buy a new motherboard that has PCI-e 16|||What motherboard do you have has only PCI-e x1 slots???
