Whats the best gaming video card for under $500 (PCI X16)?

I finally have some extra money to update my computer, and I think right now its really the video card that's holding me back from being able to max out graphics on games like Crysis. I wanted to know what the best video card I could get for under $500 would be, and also if it would require any modifications such as more cooling systems. (I've already upgraded my power supply). Thanks!|||The best graphics card on the market at the moment is the ATi HD 4870x2

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis…|||I'm not sure what currency of $500 but here in Australia you can get a quality ATi 4870 card.

The ATi 4870 is the fastest 512MB single card available on the market. (The 1GB version is pretty awesome too) The NVidia equivalent would be the 260 or 280 although only the 260 is under $500 Aus.

I'd go with the 4870 as the catalyst control centre <which comes with it> lets you overclock the graphics card if you have sufficient cooling quite easily.. (So it has some extra life).
